RAD Named Finalist for Convergence World Awards 2008
22nd April 2008: RAD Data Communications, a leading provider of broadband technologies for fixed and mobile operators, has today been named a finalist for the Convergence World Awards 2008.
The Convergence World Awards are presented by Convergence World magazine in association with the International Engineering Consortium (IEC). The awards are endorsed by leading industry bodies the Fixed Mobile Convergence Alliance (FMCA) and the Wi-Fi Alliance.
RAD's unique cellular backhauling device, the LA-130 cell site gateway, was named a finalist in the Best Ethernet Advancement category. The LA-130 is the market's first gateway that aggregates 2G, 3G and HSDPA traffic from cell sites and efficiently backhauls it over cost-effective Ethernet networks and ubiquitous broadband technologies such as DSL.
"For the first time the capacity bottleneck in mobile networks has shifted from the radio air-interface into the backhaul network. This means that the backhaul is now hindering the ability of mobile users to fully experience services such as Web surfing, video telephony, media streaming, and the use of data applications," stated Gaby Junowicz, RAD's Director of Product Management and Business Development. "The LA-130 implements Ethernet technology for cellular backhaul, thereby dramatically increasing capacity while also reducing the cost of this most expensive part of the network. We are honoured to be finalists for the Convergence World Awards for our part in bringing together the best of fixed and mobile worlds to enable real mobile broadband."
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in London on the evening of Tuesday, 29th April as part of the IEC's SOFNET 08 exhibition and conference.
The independent judging panel for the Convergence World Awards is comprised of Barry J. Sullivan, Ph.D., Director, Content Development at the IEC; Andrew Howarth, Program Director at the Fixed Mobile Convergence Alliance; Karen Hanley, Senior Director at the Wi-Fi Alliance, John Williamson, editor of Convergence World, and Peter Purton, editor of Wireless Business Review.
RAD's LA-130 cell site gateway was the recipient of a Global Mobile Award in February 2008 and is being deployed by Tier-1 cellular operators around the world.
