RAD Participates in World's First Multi-Vendor Mobile Backhaul Interoperability Showcase

Demonstrates Simultaneous Aggregation of 2G and 3G Traffic over Metro Ethernet and MPLS Networks as well as Ethernet OAM for 4G Backhaul

Paris, France, 5th February 2008: RAD Data Communications is among the fifteen telecommunications industry vendors participating in the world's first multi-vendor mobile backhaul interoperability showcase, which is being held this week at the MPLS and Ethernet World Congress in Paris.
The event was organized by the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) and supported by the IP/MPLS Forum and the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) to demonstrate the viability of mobile backhaul over Carrier Ethernet and Provider Backbone Bridge-Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) technologies.
The applications tested using RAD access devices demonstrated the simultaneous aggregation of 2G TDM and 3G ATM cellular backhaul traffic over Metro Ethernet and MPLS networks, as well as Ethernet Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM), which enables cellular service providers to proactively monitor and control their service end-to-end over tomorrow's multi-vendor, multi-access technology backhaul networks:
* ATM service emulation and TDM circuit emulation: ATM and TDM traffic was transported over a PBB-TE metro area network between Nortel's Multiservice Switch 15000 and RAD's ACE-3200 cell-site gateway.
* Interdomain circuit emulation services over ATM E1 and TDM E1. Cisco's 7606 and RAD's ACE-3200 were connected via Ceragon's FibeAir IP-MAX2 microwave access solution and used LDP signaled MPLS pseudowires. Three types of circuit emulation were tested over MPLS: SAToP, ATMoMPLS and CESoPSN.
* Adaptive service clock synchronisation. Cisco's 7606 and RAD's ACE-3200 (master-slave) as well as the ACE-3200 and Nortel's Multiservice Switch 15000 were paired to demonstrate an external reference clock recovery from the TDM network. Wander was tested according to ITU-T G.823 between the Cisco 7606 and RAD's ACE-3200, and the results showed accuracy better than 16 ppb.
* Mobile applications. A GSM base station transported proprietary CES over Ethernet to a RAD ETX-202 Ethernet network termination unit (E-NTU), which linked to a FibeAir IP-MAX2. Clock synchronisation between the base station and the emulated network controller was achieved using NTPv3.
* Ethernet Link OAM (802.1ah). RAD's ETX-202 E-NTU was tested for link OAM discovery, OAM dying gasp and OAM loopback.
* End-to-end Ethernet service OAM. RAD's ETX-202 E-NTU was tested for CFM (continuity fault management) as defined by the IEEE’s 802.1ag standard. This included continuity check, linktrace and loopback.
"These demonstrations are truly advanced tests of tomorrow's technology," states Gaby Junowicz, Director of Product Management and Business Development at RAD Data Communications, who is also a featured speaker at the MPLS and Ethernet World Congress. "What all of these different applications have in common is their ability to optimise cellular backhaul bandwidth from multiple generations of cell sites and, using pseudowire emulation technology, hand it off to a packet-switched transport network," he explains. "In this way, RAD technology guarantees cellular operators a seamless migration to the all-IP access infrastructure of the future."
